ITGS 1H Word Processing & Desktop Publishing Rubric

In the blog A Difference, the author commonly uses a collaboration technique that is stunning in its simplicity, and powerful in its ability to teach web 2.0 skills and dispositions. Darren invites students to comment on his blog in an effort to determine the parameters of an assessment rubric. What a great idea.

So, ITGS 1H, I am going to try this concept out with you on our next big project; you will help me create a rubric that defines the learning outcomes for a desktop publishing project.

I already know what you will need to learn, that’s my job, but you will help me determine what success is, and how much each of the parameters (indicators) should be worth in the final grade.

The Project: We will incorporate two major objectives: applying word processing skills using your favorite word processor, and creating a professional desktop publication using Adobe InDesign. The two are commonly used together in the publishing world and are classic examples of productivity tools.

The first stage will involve writing a short piece of no more than 500-1000 words about a new IT development within the Education Area of Impact. I had a thought that it would be a great idea to focus on a few topics that ISB teachers might be interested in. Ideas that would work might include: Laptops in Schools, Social Networking, Educational Applications, and Web 2.0 tools.

The second stage will involve creating an InDesign document with a standard layout including a picture or two licensed under creative commons, probably from Flickr. This document will include your article. All of them will be collated into a booklet and published in color for the faculty to read.

The goal of the collaboration in this blog is to complete this assessment rubric linked below. It is a Google spreadsheet shared with everybody. There is no need to log in.
